Dare To Be Great

Somewhere in the Bible, Jesus told a young man to leave everything he has and follow him if he wants to enter the kingdom of heaven.  The young man turned away sadly because he had many possessions.

In Ayn Rand’92s The Fountainhead, Dominique was talking to a businessman who was about to give Howard the commission for a building he had in mind.  She told him that Howard would probably build him something great, not just good, but great.  She then asked him if he’92s ready for the responsibilities that goes with having a great building.  He decided to give the commission to someone else.

In seven month’92s time I, too, will be face to face with a ’93dare to be great’94 situation.  I have thought long and hard about it and I believe that in the coming weeks and months, I shall continue to think and ponder and reflect.

On the one hand, there’92s the specter of having nothing, of being stripped of whatever comfort that I currently enjoy.  On the other, there’92s the promise of living a more meaningful life, of living on my own terms, of making a difference in this world.

Somewhere deep inside, I feel that I must follow the more heroic path; but uncertainty looms like a huge death scythe over my head.  I feel like a hypocrite telling my sister to just close her eyes and do it anyway and yet here I am, wrestling with the obvious.

I still have nights and nights ahead of me.  I know each night will be a battle between what I think is right and what I feel is right.
