Balut, Penoy

Ok, so it’s not a ballad really, more of a cry for– well, for customers to buy his eggs.’a0 Erm, that didn’t come out right.’a0 Anyway, how come balut vendors always have a very fine voice?.’a0 I have yet to hear’a0 a vendor who shouts BALUT offkey.’a0 Perhaps having a good voice is a pre-requisite to joining the basket-trotting throng.’a0 Otherwise, the cry would be so garrish sounding that instead of looking out of the window, people would rather cover their ears.

Usually at this hour, our village balut vendor would make his rounds.’a0 I don’t know if he does it intentionally but when he does his spiel, his cry has a melodic sound to it that reminds me of the grandfather in the Keannu Reeves movie “A Walk In The Clouds”.’a0 If you have not seen the movie, then that’s just too bad because Anthony Quinn as the grandpa was terrific.’a0 Especially when he was teaching Keannu a serenade to sing to his granddaughter.’a0 Anyway, the serenade starts with “Amor..”, which somehow sounds like BALUT.’a0 Oh well, you get the idea.
