Call Me Sponge, Sponge Cola

May 8, 2009

Sponge Cola’s ‘Di Na Mababawi’ is a song that got me in a loop.  I love understated things, you know, things that give you a hint of certain violence but are effectively held back by a leash.  The Brits are said to be raised not to show any emotion but I guess that’s aimed at things past, and not the present.  Some call it poise, composure, skillfully walking on thin ice, whatever.  I just like to think of it as understated.

What I really love about ‘some’ of Sponge Cola’s songs is that you get to hear Filipino words that you no longer hear on a day to day basis. In Pasubali for example, you hear phrases like ‘ipinid and pinto/ibaling sa ‘kin’. It’s a shame really because these truly pinoy words are so frickin’ romantic and poetic that you kinda want to burst into song yourself.

Here’s Pasubali
