Moonlight is another TV Show take on the vampire/immortality theme. This time it goes against a lot of the vampire rules; daylight for example, and holy water, and stake-through-the-heart. While some TV Shows view these things a fatal to a vampire, Moonlight argues that these are not. Well, stakes through the heart may incapacitate/paralyze them, it generally does not result in instant death.

The show revolves around a vampire who was turned by his wife not so long ago. He has positioned himself as a private investigator so he can help mankind. His tipping point was when his vampire wife brought home a little girl that she planned on turning so they can become a complete family. He killed his wife (or did he?) to protect the little girl. There was no turning back after that.

The Affair

One of the things that really interested me was Mick St. John’s (the vampire PI) description of an affair. He asked one of the female protagonists if she’s ever had one. He described an affair as unlike a fever that grips your being, so much so that you do things that you normally wouldn’t do. It is an even so destructive that either one or both of the parties involved are destroyed. Joseph, on of the vampires in the show, said that it’s something people search for all their lives and yet when they find it, it turns out to be the cause of their destruction. Such irony there.

I’m not sure if I’ve had something like that in my life so far. I may have, if I think about those short episodes of madness that, well, had me losing control. Those short bursts were exhilarating and, Mick was right, destructive. I guess I was lucky to come out in one piece. But man, those times were a different kind of high. It’s like gambling your life away just for a few brief moments. I believe those were the times that Hitch (Wil Smith) alluded to when he talked about the moments that take your breath away.

I actually finished Moonlight Season 1 in one sitting, although I was drifting in and out of sleep. Sometimes the episode I was watching would merge seamlessly into my mini-dream but I would slap myself awake as my dreams turn silly. I may have to watch the entire Season 1 all over again to check out those episodes that I may have skipped. But it’s alright, the show is compelling enough that going over it a second time around should not invite contempt.
