Smashed Smasher

June 2, 2007

I broke my racket this morning in our annual company badminton tourney. The accumulation of mishits finally took their toll on one of my most prized possessions.

I didn’t give it much thought earlier. I was too pre-occupied looking for a similar racket to finish the match. We still won but that’s neither here nor there.

Looking at it now, I feel a sudden rush of nostalgia. I’ve been playing with this racket for four years. I had to thicken my skin just to ask somebody I barely knew to buy it for me in Thailand, where it’s sold at less than half the price here. I wasn’t about to let go of some serious money for a racket that I can get somewhere at a bargain. And if a few embarassed moments is all that’s standing between me and a discount, then so be it.

I still remember eagerly waiting in the airport for that acquaintance to arrive, imagining how my smash would be more damaging with the new racket (such wishful thinking). I even had it beside me in bed the first day.

But it’s gone now. It has outlived it’s useful life. It’s now time for me to move on and check out Toby’s for another model. Hopefully what Lazarus recommended would work for me. I’m still thinking of buying the same model but the thought of trying out something else fills me with anticipation.

The only thing left to do is frame this busted racket and hang it in my bedroom wall. Where it belongs.

Sorry to hear about the retirement of your smashing buddy. You certainly need a new one.

Let me try your new racket next week. Mine is more than 3 yrs old and brought me lots of joy(trophies and medals).

What racket brand are you using fence? Just curious; it sounds high-end kasi ;)
Our company’s having its annual tourney in two weeks time, too.

It was high-end during its heyday. :)

It was a Yonex Armortec 700. Considered a dinosaur now I think. I’m not sure if Taufik Hidayat still uses the same model.

We’re supposed to be fighting for the championship by the end of the month, but too bad we had to default. It’s time for me to go away again. :(

Anyway, good luck!!

Well, sayang nga ang championship. A have a friend who plays competitive tennis and he excels in badminton as well; I guess the same goes for you. Anyway, have a good trip. :)

Zar, that was way back in high school it’s been what, 6 years already? Harhar. Anyway it’s just a company tourney so the field is very limited. Nothing much is at stake except internal bragging rights for an entire year. :)
